| Her research work encompasses the research and development of advanced drug delivery systems for dermal and subcutaneous administration, aimed at achieving more patient-friendly and efficient treatment. Her work primarily focuses on atopic dermatitis and formulations based on lyotropic liquid crystals. She develops dermal formulations for local therapy and supportive skin care, as well as in situ forming depot systems for the subcutaneous delivery of biopharmaceuticals. Particular emphasis is placed on the comprehensive evaluation of their physicochemical properties and biocompatibility using relevant cell-culture models. She is also actively involved in various research and development projects conducted in collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry and commercial partners.

Mercedes Vitek graduated from Gimnazija Novo mesto in 2012 as a golden graduate. Afterwards, she enrolled at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Pharmacy (UL FFA), in the uniform master’s study programme in Pharmacy. During her studies, she was an active member of the Slovenian Association of Pharmacy Students and the Student Council of the Faculty of Pharmacy. She conducted the research work for her master’s thesis in the field of the development of solid dispersions produced via hot-melt extrusion and spray drying within the Erasmus+ exchange programme (April 2017 – August 2017) at the University of Bonn, Institute of Pharmacy, under the supervision of Prof. Odon Planinšek and Prof. Karl G. Wagner. She successfully completed her studies in 2018 and was then employed at UL FFA at the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology as an assistant. In 2019, she enrolled in the doctoral study programme in Biomedicine, field of Pharmacy, under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Mirjam Gosenca Matjaž and Assoc. Prof. Alenka Zvonar Pobirk. |
