Aleš Obreza was born in 1974 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. After the secondary school he visited the Faculty of pharmacy, University of Ljubljana, which he successfully finished with his diploma work on September 2nd 1998 under the supervision of prof. dr. Danijel Kikelj. After the studies, he was employed at the Faculty of Pharmacy as a young researcher with Prof. Dr. Uroš Urleb at the Department of pharmaceutical chemistry. His postgraduate studies were completed on November 7th 2002 with the thesis "The design and synthesis of azaphenylalanine derivatives as thrombin inhibitors". On December 2004 he was nominated as the Assist. Professor, on December 2009 as Assoc. Professor an on March 2015 as Professor for the field of pharmaceutical chemistry. The majority of his research work in previous years was involved in the design and synthesis of low-molecular-weight serine proteases inhibitors that take part in blood coagulation cascade, the design and synthesis of inhibitors of the bacterial cell-wall biosynthesis, new anti-cancer drugs and the synthesis of new amphiphyllic antioxidants, the projects which are currently taking place at the Department of pharmaceutical chemistry. In 2008 he spent several months in the laboratories at the University of Leeds as a visiting researcher. He is the lecturer of three subjects on the Uniform master's programme of Pharmacy: Introduction to the pharmacy, Pharmaceutical chemistry I and II and of two subjects on the Undergraduate study programme of Cosmetology: Cosmetic products I and Infomatics in cosmetology. In last years he was a supervisor or co-supervisor for several undergraduate thesis, a supervisor and co-supervisor for PhD- thesis and a mentor for two research works that received the faculty Prešeren award. He took place at several national and international symposia from the field of drug design and synthesis and is a member of numerous professional and scientific organisations, such as European Peptide Society, Commission for the preparation of National formulary for the European Pharmacopoeia, the Commission for the preparation of Slovenian pharmaceutical dictionary, member of the Commission for European Pharmacopoeia at EDQM. He was the vice-president of the Slovenian Pharmaceutical Society, the chair for the Section of pharmaceutical sciences of the Slovenian Pharmaceutical Society… Until 2011 he was also responsible for the organisation of yearly postgraduate courses at the Faculty of Pharmacy and from 2009 until 2011 he was the coordinator for Uniform master’s study programme Pharmacy 5+0. From October 2011 until September 2017 he was Vice Dean for Study Affairs at the Faculty of Pharmacy. From 2018 he is a member of the Habilitation Commission of the University of Ljubljana and from December 2021 its president. |
